It’s been a big week for Tiger Woods—probably the worst week of his life. Yesterday I heard a radio host asking whether or not Tiger’s apparent infidelity will tarnish his legacy. I guess my question is, “How could it not?” One definition of legacy is, “anything handed down from the past.” So what Tiger will pass down is not only a legacy of phenomenal focus on the golf course but one of infidelity to his wife and children.
The good news for Tiger (and for me as one who hopes he can turn things around) is that he still has a good measure of control over his legacy. He has, barring the unexpected, a lot of life to live. He could come completely clean with Elin. He could stick to his vows from here-on-in. He could even respond to the restorative grace of God. It’s been done before--most famously by a guy named David whose legacy (tarnished as it is) shines brightly even today.
