Video of the Week
OK. We’re going to do a complete change-up from the last edition of video of the week. Lately I have been intrigued by the music of Weezer. Yes...Weezer (those of you not into alternative rock may want to move-on right about now). I think part of my interest is due to front-man Rivers Cuomo. Back in the day, Cuomo noticed that a lot of alternative bands in the 90’s were going over-the-top in terms of trying to shock their audience. So, he decided to model his band after—get this—The Beach Boys. In an interview with Rolling Stone he stated that Boys’ clean-cut image seemed, ironically, rebellious. Although Weezer and I may not see eye-to-eye on everything, there is a lot about their music that I do find, ironically, refreshing.
Some of my favourite Weezer songs are about staying true to self. This music video, Pork and Beans, is one of those. Written after a meeting where the band was pressured by their label to fit a certain image, it is also a tribute to some of the best viral videos of all time. If you don’t get the inside jokes…well just listen to the words.
