I just got back from a walk through the Cochrane Ranche—one of my favourites spots to walk and pray. One thing I’ve noticed about setting aside a time to pray is that it seems difficult just to get started. In fact getting started may be the most difficult part of all. At the moment I plan to begin fourteen pressing matters suddenly emerge out of nowhere all screaming for my immediate attention. A similar phenomenon takes place when it comes to a scheduled workout. All-of-sudden I feel a strange pressure to put off the exercise in favour of a few extra chores or minutes of sleep. In both cases it takes serious will-power (and perhaps Someone else’s power too?) to ignore the competing voices and stick with the plan.
I’m starting to think that this is just part and parcel of any kind of discipline in a person’s life. If it’s worthwhile, it probably won’t come easily or naturally.
