It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

You can’t beat summer. As much as you gotta love the whole Christmas-cheer thing, I would trade a decade of white Christmases for 4 (or 5 or 6) straight months of summer every year. This past Saturday night was a perfect night. Clear skies all day, hot during the day, close to 20 degrees even at 9 p.m. Got me thinking about my “best things about summer” top-ten list.

1) Good Host Iced Tea. Sorry Kirkland, Nestea, Brisk or nasty-no-sugar-American-style-brewed iced-tea’s! Mr . Host corners the market on true iced tea goodness.

2) Long Days. There are some advantages to living in the north, one of which is having the sun up early and down late. Makes for great early and late MTB rides!

3) Biking. You just can’t get enough biking—especially on those long June and July days.

4) Vacation. Need I say more?

5) Trees with leaves on them. For those of you that live in southern or coastal environments, you just don’t understand how late the leaves arrive and how early they depart in Cochrane. Leaves on trees are a privilege. Enjoy them while you can.

6) Blockbusters. Summer is when all the good movies come out. Although, now that I think about it, I've only seen one this summer. Too much biking I guess.

7) Neighbours. Every summer I am amazed at how much more I interact with the people who live around me. Once November hits, its like my “hood” turns into a ghost town. Everyone slips into their garages only coming outside to shovel their walks as quickly as possible.

8) Water. Swimming, boating and just being near to it.

9) Family Walks and Bike Rides. Last night I must have biked 5 km with my 6 and 4 year old. We didn’t need to put on jackets and they didn’t complain even once about being outside.

10) Summer Food. Corn on the cob, watermelon, ice cream, peaches, raspberries, BBQ’d meat (although I think we Canadians pretty much BBQ year-round).

 Anything I missed?
